Welcome
The early Easter this year is starting to show welcome signs of Spring in the UK and we hope that you are also experiencing warmth in your collaborations - or at least a thawing of any icy relations! In this edition we report on some useful learning from impromptu activities, including using Samurai swords, and from the NASSCOM conference in Mumbai.

We've included details here of forthcoming sessions and we do hope members will come to as many as possible. If you are not a member and would like to come along to meet us and find out more, please contact Sue O'Connor.

> Extreme collaboration with Samurai swords

Following a recent event hosted by NESTA (National Endowment for Science, Technology and the Arts http://www.nesta.org.uk) in London titled 'Co- Creation Rules', GBPA Chairman Philip Anderson reports on some surprising activities designed to surface skills and attitudes necessary for 'extreme collaboration'.

Finding myself participating in a room full of people trying to inflict mortal wounds on each other in slow motion with imaginary Samurai swords, I did wonder what I was doing. Worryingly, I found it energising and fun. Reassuringly, I was not alone. We all had to risk losing our usual self-control to join in, but encouraged by a very enthusiastic demonstration of what we could do, we did so with alarming alacrity and it wasn't long before the floor was covered with the vanquished. The extreme demonstration empowered us - does this tell us something about leadership, I wondered?

In another exercise, working in pairs, we co-created portraits. We discovered that we drew pictures that none of us could have done on our own, yet we each felt that we could influence the outcome. Perhaps because we were not solely responsible for the outcome, we felt less inhibited and allowed ourselves to be more creative. Also, because we had such a clear purpose, it was easy to quickly collaborate.

In our current Discovery project on 'Being collaborative - the essential capability for the individual, team and leader today', we have discovered that a truly collaborative team requires not just the appropriate skills and environment, but beliefs and values that shift the focus of interest away from self towards the shared ambition and outcome. More on this in next month's eNews, when members will be receiving their copies of this Discovery report and gaining access to GBPA's collaborative individual, team and leader assessment tools.

> Mumbai: GBPA at NASSCOM
mumbai
As part of developing GBPA's collaborations in India, GBPA CEO Amanda Crouch recently attended the National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM http://www.nasscom.in) conference in Mumbai.

NASSCOM represents the interests of member companies in the Indian software and BPO industry. Amanda was particularly interested in the speech made by Anand Mahindra, Vice Chairman and MD of Mahindra & Mahindra , who drew on Indian mythology to chart the success of the IT industry in India and highlight the key challenge it is facing today. The mythology he used was the Trimurti - which is about Brahma, the creator, Vishnu, the sustainer, and Shiva, the destroyer - to highlight the various stages of growth for the IT industry. The key message was that although the Indian IT industry has been enormously successful to date, its future success will depend on being able to respond to new global opportunities and in order to do so it must constantly reinvent itself. This reinvention will come from partnering with other organisations to provide innovative solutions and from partnering more closely with their customer base to provide enhanced value.

Obviously this will require a mindshift in many organisations which is summed up succinctly in the following quote: 'My father thought the world would be the same. My children, however wake up EVERY morning thinking the world will be different. Lets begin by emulating our children. Time to wake up and make the world different.'

> The Netherlands: Moving transactional relationships towards strategic partnerships
meeting
The GBPA Special Interest Forum (SIF) in the Netherlands on 22 April will focus on 'Moving Customer/Supplier relationships from transactional, through collaborative to strategic partnerships'.

How do organisations build more meaningful supplier relationships? What makes these relationships move from supplier to partner status? And how is this achieved?

These are some of the questions we will explore during this session, when GBPA will share their research based insights and practical experiences into what elements need to be in place to create mutually collaborative relationships.

This event is in Amsterdam on 22 April from 16:00 to 18:00, followed by drinks, eats and networking. To register please contact Sue O'Connor soconnor@gbpalliance.com

> Special Interest Forums: London
puzzle
The next three GBPA Special Interest Forums (SIFs) in London are morning sessions (09:00 to 11:30), with the following topics:
  • Breaking down the silos - 2 April - focused on internal collaboration, it will consider how silos form within an organisation and their impact. We will also look at what conditions need to exist, the 'politics' required within an organisation, together with the leadership techniques that need to be employed to 'break down' any silos to assist collaboration.
  • Dealing with crises - 8 May - focused on relationship management, it recognises that crises do inevitably occur and they can test the best of management practices, in even the best run companies. So how do you manage crises when they cross the boundaries of a partnership? How should you prepare, plan, rehearse and become adept at handling crises?
  • Innovating together - 15 May - focused on customer / supplier relationships; it will study the most effective partnership behaviours and operations to facilitate a climate for innovation. We will examine the environment and processes to surface complementary skills, capabilities and knowledge from each partner so as to bring forward innovative ideas, actions and strategies.

> Driving business innovation through collaboration
large light bulb
Today, most organisations are striving to create innovation. It is the new corporate buzzword, but what does it really mean? Much time and resource is devoted to the pursuance of innovation but does it really produce innovative results? Perhaps innovation would occur more readily through collaboration with other organisations? but this approach is often perceived to be both risky and difficult. So what is the secret of successful innovation through collaboration? What collaborative approaches to innovation have proven to be successful? How does an organisation identify who to partner with, and what collaborative culture needs to exist for innovation to thrive?

These questions will provide the backdrop for a stimulating and insightful session at our next evening event in London on 1 May.
